MI will be captained by Rohit Sharma who is back after an injury and will play Mumbai Indians vs Rising Pune Supergiant 2nd Match.
It’s a 2nd game of Indian Premier League 2017 coming on 06th April 2017 where the team RPS vs MIwill face off in 2nd match of IPL with each other at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune at 08:00 PM local time.
MS Dhoni is no longer captain of the team so the management has opted for Australian skipper Steven Smith to do the job. The particular decision has drawn a lot of criticisms from the local media and fans but the team management thinks this is the right way forward for the franchise.
The RPS group, who is the owner of this Pune team, are desperate for a good result from their team in this season. Pune would be depend on their squad of Kevin Pietersen, Ishant Sharma, Thisara Perera, RP Singh, Peter Handscomb, Saurabh Tiwary and Albie Morkel and bought the auction’s most high profile player, Ben Stokes.
The Rohit Sharma’s team failed to make the playoff stage last year, but despite that, they kept faith in their core group and retained 20 players. Mumbai Indians team management believe, their current set of players is good enough to carry the goods.
Rising Pune Supergiants strong part
Likes of MS Dhoni , Steven Smith, Ajinkya Rahane, Faf du Plessis, Ben Stokes around in the line-up, batting is clearly the strength of RPS. In fact, currently, RPS is looking to be one of the strongest batting line-ups in this IPL.
Dhoni no longer having the burden of captaincy, we can expect him to bat up the order, preferably at number 4 or 5. It would help him to spend some more time at the crease. He can also play more freely. So, don’t be surprised if you see Dhoni coming out and attacking the bowler’s right from the start of his innings.
Skipper Smith’s recent batting form is also going to be big advantage for RPS. He will most may be bat at number 3 and take care of the middle order expected from Rahane and Manoj Tiwary. Stokes also can be a key strength for RPS in the Down order.
Rising Pune Supergiants Weaknesses
The major weakness of this team is seems Bowling. After their two major players Mitchell Marsh and Ravichandran Ashwin were ruled out of this year’s IPL, the bowling plans of RPS is definitely going to be hampered. The absence of Ashwin especially will hurt them the most.
However, on this absence, the likes of Adam Zampa , Imran Tahir, and Stokes will mostly take care of the bowling duties for RPS. Rajat Bhatia, Ankit Sharma, Jaydev Unadkat and Ashoke Dinda will play the supporting roles.
Mumbai Indians Strength
Strong batting line-up is Mumbai Indians strength. This core group have been around for reasonably from few years now and everyone in the team is aware of their responsibilities.
Their skipper Rohit Sharma recovering his full fitness ahead of the start of the event is good news for Mumbai Indians. He is their key batsman, along with Lendl Simmons, Jos Butler, Ambati Rayudu and wicketkeeper-batsman Parthiv Patel.
In the bowling department, the combination of Lasith Malinga, Mitchell Johnson, Tim Southee, Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah make for a good pace attack. Harbhajan Singh is their main lead spinner and the likes of Shreyas Gopal, Karn Sharma, J Suchith and Kunal Pandya can be partner him occasionally.
Mumbai Indians Weakness
Last year they tried out five different opening combinations throughout the tournament. The main problem of Mumbai Indians is getting a settled opening pair. This year, either Parthiv Patel or Lendl Simmons is expected to partner Rohit at the top.
Absence in the first few matches Lasith Malinga can affect Mumbai Indian’s game plans for few matches of the tournament. However, either Tim Southee or Mitchell Johnson can mark in for him. England’s Jos Butler will not be available after May 14 so replacing him would be also big issue.
Pitch and weather conditions: Recently, when the MCA stadium in Pune hosted the first Test of the India-Australia series, the wicket turned out to be a rank turner. However, during IPL, the wicket will not be that bad. But still, spinners will get some help from the track.
Top Pune runscorer
Rahane, as expected, is the fun at 13/5. Smith comes in at 10/3 and he managed 45 in the corresponding fixture last year. There is no doubt on his class as a batsman and at No 5 he can still do damage.
Top MI runscorer
It will be good to see Rohit fit and firing. Before his injury misery he was the most damaging batsman in the world. He gets a 23/10 quote after slaying Pune with an unbeaten 85 their last season. Lendl Simmons is 10/3 but he is unlikely to play. He is one of the most reliable batsmen in T20 and should be one of the first names on the team sheet.
